I'm not sure it's an eccentric perspective; while I don't think they "murder" it later, I do strongly prefer the earlier Stephens, with Phil instead of Donna and that raggedy, edge-of-wildness intensity. I think there are other folks on the forum who feel the same way. But I appreciate the slower, sweeter take on it, too. On the other hand, if there was a midi version, I'm sure I'd think they murdered it then :-)

The 83 St.Stephens are quite good though, I think. 10/15/83 especially seems to really have the essential energy of the song just right - in fact, heretical as it may be, I think its better than some of the weaker 69 St. Stephens, and if we include the Jerry+Bobby space as a St. Stephen prelude, it's maybe one of my top 5 favorites.

In general I like the early 80s GD more than the late 70s GD, although may 77 is indeed pretty amazing.

I'm sure it would have been cool to catch a Stephen in '83, but better than '69? I don't think so.
